Poppets are self-guided, actuated check valves, typically used with a spring. Vernay poppets are used in check valve assemblies in conjunction with a spring to provide a precise cracking (opening) pressure.

Design Characteristics

Function

For precise opening pressure and/or for higher reverse pressures the poppet provides advantages. The advantage over a needle is that the seat contact angle can be almost straight to prevent "corking" at high pressures and the advantage over a ball is that the orientation of the contacting rubber is maintained by the stem so that compression set effects are not random and consequently sealing actually improves with use.

Working Principle

Poppets are composed of a rigid insert body and a chemical bonded elastomer sealing portion which normally is dome shaped. The poppet can also be made entirely from elastomer. The insert section is for guiding the check valve in its housing. The dome end seals against a conical seat. The insert may be made from a variety of materials such as steel, aluminum, brass or engineering plastics. Coatings and conversion layers might be applied to increase wear resistance, reduce friction, etc.

Mounting Instructions

Poppets are used in customer-designed applications. Therefore, general guidelines for mounting are not given. For specific questions related to your design, please contact Vernay.

Performance Characteristics

Opening Pressure

Definition

Opening Pressure is the differential pressure required for the valve to allow forward flow that meets the specified flow threshold. As the flow threshold increases, the Opening Pressure will also increase. Conversely, reducing the flow threshold will result in a lower Opening Pressure. Water test data is available upon request.

Reverse Leakage

Definition

Leakage, or reverse flow, is measured by gradually increasing the backpressure across the valve, starting from zero. Please note that the leakage graph uses a different scale compared to the flow graphs. Water test data is available upon request. Forward

Forward Flow

Definition

Flow and differential pressure are measured simultaneously as the inlet pressure increases from zero. Once the maximum flow is reached, the pressure is gradually reduced back to zero, with flow and differential pressure measured throughout the process. The chart displays the minimum and maximum flow values recorded during tests of multiple samples at each pressure level. Water test data is available upon request.
