Materials Process Engineer

Job Scope

The Materials Process Engineer is responsible for providing technical support for the mixing and pre-forming of compounds for both the Milledgeville and Griffin, Georgia locations. This includes leadership in the area of reactive and proactive quality improvement, cost reduction, compound development, and support for new product development and appropriate downstream operations (internal and external customers).


Primary Responsibilities/Essential Skills


  • Develop mixing, milling and pre-forming (extrusion) processes for existing and new compounds.
  • Correlate production mixing input parameters to optimize compounds for reduced variation, material properties and cost.
  • Manage changes to compounds due to improvements and ingredient rationalizations.
  • Serve as the primary technical contact for compound related issues.
  • Provide cost estimates and cost reduction calculations associated with compounds, mixing and pre-forming.
  • Provide technical support to internal customers for processing problems at downstream operations, as applicable.
  • Initiate and approve engineering changes (ECR) related to compounds produced and other changes.
  • Provide training to VMI employees on compound related matters, as appropriate.
  • Maintain the integrity of lab procedures, equipment and data.
  • Create and maintain appropriate statistical tools to detect drift in lab and mixer equipment.
  • Use and maintain appropriate statistical tools and limits (spec. and control) to monitor compound properties.
  • Introduce measures and/or control equipment to evaluate and ensure processability of compounds.
  • Specify, identify and justify capital improvements to mixing system equipment.
  • Maintain systems data related to your functional responsibilities according to the matrix located on SharePoint/Global Share Documents/Information Technology/Systems Data Maintenance/.

Education, Experience, and Skills Required


  • Bachelor of Science Degree in a technical field (mechanical, chemical, industrial, or electrical).
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in manufacturing facility.
  • Working knowledge of current ISO quality standards.
  • Proven Problem Solver; Demonstrated ability to determine true root cause.
  • Working knowledge of one of the following; rubber, LSR, plastic materials, or assembly.
